“The Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Gala and also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. It marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit.” – Wikipedia
Each year, the Met Gala is an opportunity for artists, actors, designers, performers and other celebrities to show their creative side in fashion. It’s an opportunity for everyone to be as essentric as they wish around the theme of the gala. This year the theme was Man v Machine which most attendees seemed to interpret as being dressed in metallics or dressing with metal props. It all seemed to obvious and cliche but there were others who did it well. An honorable mention would be Claire Danes whose dress literally would light up in the dark.
Another honorable mention goes to Karolina Kurkova who took the Manus x Machina theme seriously. Marchesa and IBM Watson teamed up to create Karolina’s gown. It lit up when people tweeted about the gala. The lights were not added to the boning but were instead incorporated them into the stems of the flowers of the dress. Keren Craig who is co-founder of Marchesa stated that it was their intention to use technology that reflected the brand.
Aside from dresses that would light up, there were dresses and fashion that reflected a futuristic vibe and some that were simply beautiful and therefore timeless. Jennifer Hudson wore a beautiful white dress with feathers at the bottom to the Met Gala. She looked like a beautiful bride (which is ironic since she’s been engaged forever!). Beyonce went full latex in a rubber nude-coloured gown with pearls attached. Twitter was bemused with many wondering if this dresses reflected lyrics from her Lemonade album (wear her skin over mine…her teeth as confetti). She looked beautiful with dramatic eye makeup.
The focus is usually on women’s fashion but the men showed up and showed out in their suits at the Met Gala as well. Idris Elba looked like a prince waiting to rescue his Cinderella at the ball. Zayn Malik (formerly of One Direction) escorted Gigi Hadid while wearing what appeared to be metal armour. It looked hilarious but perfect at the same time. She complimented him in a gown that seemed to be straight from the Hunger Games. As a matter of fact, almost all the attendees seemed like they were from the Hunger Games.
With most attendees the Met Gala choosing to interpret the theme as “wear as much metallic as you can”, stars like Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian looked like they were ready to go into battle in their dresses. Kanye West decided to add blue contact lenses and responded to one interviewer when asked about it in his usual way…”vibes”. Of course Kanye also wore ripped jeans because he just had to be different from everyone else.
